For the last month or so I've been working on moving my blog and web presence over to www.iowagrognard.com . Blogger has been kind to me as have all of you who have visited here, but I wanted a little more control over my layout and further content so I've moved.

I will be leaving this blog intact as it was, but I hope to see you all over at my new address someday.Iowa Grognardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00849551507054148559noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4213085941857846082.post-4003699618351398542017-04-14T14:31:00.000-05:002017-05-19T06:31:40.922-05:00Random Workbench After a catastrophe that saw the disappearance of all photos taken over the last few years, vacations and family photos included, I was looking to see what I could find. While mucking around in different albums and such I noticed a few pieces I never posted on the blog. These are just a few items some of you haven't seen, but have been on the workbench over the last few years.
The painting desk has been dusted, paints organized, brushes cleaned. The only thing to do now is see if I can't get my eye and brush to coordinate. Somewhere in the neighborhood of last week I picked a few pieces and started applying some pigment. First victim was the "Turkish Pirate First Mate" by Eureka Miniatures. He's shown below at a couple different stages and then completion.
All things considered, I'm fairly pleased with the final product. Its the first middle eastern flesh tone I've attempted in awhile so there is a satisfaction that this aspect went well. The only problem left is the basing. I'm not sure how I want to base him and for which game. I may use him in Darkest Africa games or perhaps as an actual pirate...in which case I need to acquire more pirates!
OPP = Other People's Painting

Last year I began collecting figures for games set in Africa. These figures by Copplestone had caught my eye long ago and I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd purchase them. At around the same time I was seeing some work done by forum mate "Timmo" and knew if opportunity presented itself I'd like to commission some figures to be done by him. After talking for a bit, I remembered these hunters and within a couple messages the painting had been arranged. I waited with much anticipation and it wasn't long before he was finished with these incredible pieces. My camera does not do them justice. Its a rare thing for me to have figures painted by somebody else, but I'm glad I did and I couldn't be happier.

Basing was done by me and is not yet finished as I've yet to decide on what ground cover I want to include. It could take some time and I'd appreciate any suggestions. In the meantime I'll peruse the Lead Adventure Forum for inspiration.
About a month ago I traded a fellow for some Foundry Indian Mutiny figures. When the box arrived, I was elated at the contents. Not only was the fellow generous in the number of figures, but they were all in good order. I had already headed down the path to collecting Indian Mutiny figures by acquiring a number of those recently released by Iron Duke, but these miniatures cemented my plans. I went straight to work in stripping the old primer off some of the officers. The inspiration provided by opening up a box full of new figures told me I needed to get my brush on the period soon to maintain my interest. These three chaps are the result.
When planning to paint these figures I knew the colors would result in a rather simple palette so I wanted to focus on execution of brushwork and trying to make the most out of the limited palette. Instead of using a single white or off-white for example I finished the hat waving gentleman with four different hues/variations of white and each of those with at least four shading and/or highlighting steps. The gentleman in the blue pants went through 4 stages of highlighting at a minimum on every piece but the sword hilt and brass on the scabbard. Overall I have to say I'm happy with both the experience of painting these as well as the finished product, which is rare territory for me.
Thanks Rob!

The Foundry Expert Flesh SetOver the years, I've led a continuous search for a favorite set of flesh tone paints. Earlier this year, after reading posts by Giles over at Tarleton's Quarter, I decided to try the Foundry Expert Flesh set. Time slipping away as it does, I only recently had the opportunity to finally use the paints I had acquired this spring. Below is a quick photo sequence following the use of the set from primed figure to final flesh stage. Hopefully this will help people see what they can expect from the set, albeit through the use of my questionable brushwork.

These figures were recently painted to be part of Nicole's Anglo-Saxon force for Saga. When assembling the figures, all but one of the original bows broke in half. I wasn't sure if I had just been on the receiving end of a bad batch or if this is common place so I just engineered my own by using left overs from trimmed 80mm pikes. Since these will be high traffic playing pieces, I figured it wasn't a bad idea and they turned out looking ok.

The blog entry over on "1000 Foot General" in regards to Dark Age Color Palettes was the jumping off point for the overall color scheme. I avoided adding anything fancy or even simple embroidery as to play up their role as "levies" in the game mechanics. In the end, I used a Mig Productions filter for the first time and although the results were subtle, I do think it made a difference in tying the figures together. The bases are Litko with magnetic bottoms.

The building is a simple 4Ground building as yet untouched past assembly.

During my recent visit to the Shiloh Battlefield and National Cemetery in Tennessee, I was surprised to find a single grave belonging to a Revolutionary War Veteran, Pvt George Ross. Using "Find a Grave" and various other websites I was able to glean some basic information including the following entry:

After a long time on the painting table, years in fact, I've finally put the last touches on the Rall Regiment. My plans for these figures are to represent the Trenton survivors for the Battle of Brandywine. Probably not my best paint job ever, but its not the worst either.

A few years ago when searching for movement trays I came across a company I had not heard about, Shogun Miniatures. As I was magnetizing my older kids' fantasy figures' bases the steel movement trays Shogun offered fit the bill perfectly. When my order arrived, they contained a few samples of the "Mag Bases". I was intrigued as they were sturdy, well made, and thin. I had always used Litko for nearly all my basing needs, but these got me thinking. I knew I had a couple of situations where I needed trays and magnetic bases. Namely TFL ACW and AWI SP variants.

Before I get too long winded, a few notes about their movement trays.

They have ZERO sharp edges and corners, not even mildly pointy. This was a problem I had way back in the 90's when I experimented with metal bases.

They can be made in custom sizes and they are really inexpensive.

They can be primed, painted, protected and still hold magnets.

They can be purchased with or without flanged edges.

For TFL ACW, I want to individually base these figures, on 20x20mm bases, as depending on the situation and troop experience they can or cannot assume a skirmish formation. The problem is I don't want to move up to 80 figures individually each turn should they all be activated. The obvious solution was movement trays and preferably magnetic. I had originally purchased enough Gale Force Nine bases to cover the job, but I found these less desirable than I had hoped. The main reasons were that they were not clean on the sides and it took a fair amount of time to trim all the excess material off as well as them being so thick. I had thought about going with Litko as usual and as I did for my AWI skirmishers. However, when my order of Shogun trays arrived and I saw the sameples, the answer was right in front of me. These bases didn't need any special treatment and their trays made everything easy. The inexpensive nature of the movement trays meant I could load up for many different situations. Most ACW groups being 8 at full strength, I could get 160mm wide movement trays in either single or double ranks and simply place them together for formations. Pretty much cake at that point.

For AWI skirmishers, I started basing these individually on 25x25mm using Litko bases and base bottoms for use in both skirmish games and placing them together on magnetized movement trays in 2's and 3's as is called for depending on troop grade in British Grenadier. After some warping on some larger wood bases, I decided to make the switch to Shogun for not only these, but as Shogun does custom sizes, I will be having some done for larger rank and file bases.

There are a number of situations for which I will continue to use Litko. Namely Saga round and oval bases as well as hexes for use in such things as gladiator games. Now, there is little reason for magnetized bases in games like Saga or gladiator games, but I noticed he convenience of moving and storing miniatures with magnetic bottoms immediately. I can take a group of a warband or set of gladiators, put them on the steel tray, place it in the display cabinet and not have to worry whether or not I'll drop them if one of my kids practices their latest tackling technique on my leg or if I flinch suddenly stepping on a LEGO (the enemy of fathers' feet everywhere).

The nice thing about both of these companies is that they represent the excellent choices we have. Both companies have great products and I've experienced great customer service from both. They've both rushed me items on short notice and I'll never forget Litko making sure I'd have a set of custom movement items for my oldest son's X-wing collection, on short notice and before Christmas. Hopefully the accompanying photos will give you an ideas as to thickness and other particulars.

This could easily be entitled "Speed Painted Skirmishers". This somewhat eclectic group of militia/skirmisher types were painted over a couple days this week in an effort to clear the painting table. I could of spent more time on the details, but these are only the first group of this type that I'll do and the next batch will be better attended. That being said, I'm continuing to have difficulties with consistent lighting and photography and as a result I'm disappointed with how these figures appear. For being a speed paintjob, they are actually better looking in person and if you've followed my painting at all you know its rare for me to pay my figures/victims many compliments. If I get things figured out I may replace with new photos.

Once again I based them individually with magnetic bottoms so they'll work for my preferred skirmish trifecta; British Grenadier skirmishers, Muskets and Tomahawks, and TFL's Sharpe Practice AWI. One nice thing about basing them individually and magnetic for British Grenadier is that when it comes to mounting them as 2's or 3's I can mix and match to either make them look more militia like or more like seasoned riflemen, etc.

This is the figure that accompanied the multi-box deal they had for their plastic British Infantry. I decided to paint him as a General that could slide into any number of roles on the wargaming table. There was an absence of button hole lace and after much trepidation I decided to take the risk and paint some in place. I'm not real happy with the result, but they'll pass on the game table. It had also been a long time since I painted a pure black horse and since I was already going to risk the lace I thought why not risk the black horse. I've got some work to do in the future when it comes to black horses, but this one will likewise pass on the game table.

I've personally always enjoyed perusing the pages of an old horse encyclopedia for ideas. Today however, I did a search looking for anything new or different when I came across these charts. You may have already come across them yourself, but on the chance somebody is interested I thought I'd post them.
I picked up a couple packages of Artizan's Pinkertons from Brigade Games last month as they looked both fun to paint and they looked ideal for some much needed shading/highlighting practice via their overcoats. They also allowed me some experimentation with colors for said overcoats. Not to mention one of the hats was painted using the Foundry Middle Eastern Flesh triad.

1 & 4 - Both of these were painted using the Andrea Color black set. A full 6 shades, happy with the result for the most part, but could have probably cut out a step or two and had similar results...especially when working toward a wargaming standard paintjob.

2 - This one was painted using the Andrea Color white set while leaving out the final (whitest) color highlight.

3 - This is where things get a little...different. I started with GW Steel Legion Drab and then washed with Devlan Mud. The first highlight was a mix of GW Steel Legion and Tallarn Sand. Another highlight was a mix of GW Tallarn Sand and Vallejo Model Color Khaki. with the final highlights being a very thinned VMC khaki

5 - Here I begin with a base of Americana craft paint color "Fawn" and then applied a thinned wash of Army Painter Soft Tone Ink. I painted up the highlights beginning again with Fawn then working with a mix of Fawn and Reaper Stained Ivory, I worked the mixed from 3:1 to 1:1 to 1:3 for the remaining highlights.

6 - GW's Baneblade Brown laid the base for this final attempt. I also used a wash of Army Painter Soft Tone Ink on this one. The first highlights where made from mixing GW Baneblade Brown and Foundry Rawhide 11B. The final highlights were of Baneblade and Foundry Rawhide 11B and 11C.

When basing them I didn't want to go the usual dusty Tombstone like setting fitting for anything from the Southern Plains, Southwest or Northern Badlands areas. I wanted to go a more muddy route for all those mountain or Black Hills mining towns. The bases themselves for GF9 magnetic. I'm not sure if I like these as much as Litko as there is a lot of clean up and there is still is a distinctive seam on the side.
The figures themselves were very nice to work with and I hope that my attempts didn't make a sow's ear out of a silk purse...

Not sure when I will be gaming the old west so I'm not sure if I'll keep these or put them up for sale in hopes of recouping enough to buy a pack of gladiators or maybe ww1 U.S. Marines.

These figures, along with Rall's Grenadiers, were started a long time ago, but have been sitting idle for some time. Making a concentrated effort to clear stuff from my painting desk I finished these Jagers today. Borrowing the basic palettes from those done on Tarleton's Quarter, I gave these a basic paint job. After such a long lay off I hope to improve quickly as I have many more AWI figures to complete along with a number of figures from other periods in which I'm dabbling.

As seen with these figures, I'm basing my skirmishers on individual 25mm x 25mm bases by Litko. Starting with .8mm plywood bases I then back them with the same size heavy duty magnetic pieces, also by Litko. I think the resulting thickness is sufficient without being obnoxious. Basing my skirmish infantry individually gives me the flexibility to play a number of skirmish games yet easily conform to the basing standards of British Grenadier. The magnetic bottoms are nice for storage and transport.
We rarely put together WAAC forces without warning and tend to place poor dicing squarely on the shoulders of the Warlord on the table at any given time. The Saxons, as my wife's SAGA faction of choice, have gone through many leadership changes. Somewhat reminiscent of the Army of the Potomac's leadership during the early years of the ACW. Thankfully, I'm unable to visualize my wife as Lincoln... That being said, my desire was to paint her McClellan equivalent first so as to perhaps entice that figure on the table more often and thereby upping my win total. This was not to be and I found myself painting first her Grant. The interesting twist, this is my first SAGA figure completed, not to mention the first after some time away from the brush, and it is wanting in style and refinement...her McClellan will hopefully be much better dressed. It'll be interesting to see who wins my wife's favor, the impending better dressed Warlords or the victory laden Grant.

The figure is from the Gripping Beast Saxon Thegns box set. Decal by LBMS. The basing is minimal as I have yet to decide just how busy I want my SAGA bases to be.
Photos are a bit off as my camera is down and I'm using the IPad to take pictures.

My usual defence of organized chaos and other weak objections have begun to hold less water as the time spent searching for particular paints has increased. In the past, when I had looked at paint rack and organizers it was difficult to know the good from the not so good; for every positive comment there seemed to be a matching negative. Not to mention my attempts at DIY usually end badly. At the end of the day, I figured the money I'd spend on organizing could be better spent on miniatures, terrain, etc.

To my surprise, one of my father's day gifts this year was the "Rack Pack" with my choice of a couple extras from Back 2 Base-ix. My wife had noticed this as one of the solutions I'd been eyeballing and with my procrastination swept aside the deed was done and the item ordered.

When considering organizers in the past I had concerns ranging from price and construction to assembly and function. As long as I was given one, I figured I'd write up my impressions of how the "Rack Pack" fits the role and give a completely unscientific and personal rating from 1 to 10..

Price: 8/10
At first glance I thought $175 from Australia was a little steep, but considering that they offer free shipping to many countries the sticker shock went down. Important to note is that you can add in a few extras at their normal cost and still get them shipped free. Each section that goes into the system can be customized for paint size and some have other options such as a front tray. Despite it being reasonable at $290 with a couple extras, I'm happy it was a gift as I probably would have bought more figures.

Shipping: 10/10
This experience ranks easily in the top ten for international orders I've placed. Free shipping with tracking from DHL was great. It was only 6 days from Australia to Minneapolis and an additional day to find me down here in the sticks.

Packaging: 10/10
Well protected and packaged all around with each component individually wrapped and protected in bubble wrap. Being that I ordered the system in acrylic rather than MDF, each sheet of acrylic is also protected by an easy peel adhesive covering to further protect it from being scratched.
Assembly: 8/10
The first thing I noticed was the absence of printed instructions, but the instructional videos were available online. This may be a problem for some, but I found it a nice format. The videos were simple and void of any annoying voiceovers.
One of the things to note about assembly was that the bolts are small, so having a small screwdriver and agile hands are a plus. Another observation is about the magnets. Make sure you watch the video concerning them so you can avoid any headaches later. In the end, assembling the Rack Pack was fairly smooth. The only problems came from my own error, often from watching Netflix while putting it together.
Overall I could easily rate this product a 9 on a scale of 10. I already plan to order their Wall Climber product for use over by the airbrush.

The Rack Pack will easily unclutter and help my painting desk, however with all things, its up to the user. If I don't use it properly and get lazy, leaving paints about, then it was obviously a waste...and I don't want to know what colorful comment my wife might have when next she sees the "organized chaos"..
It has been awhile since I've been able to post the completion of another regiment, but life has been keeping me busy. As a direct result of this, my painting has probably suffered a bit as I again try and find my style.

I used all my previous palettes except I changed the flesh by using more panzer aces flesh tones in the mix.

I have Rall's regiment about halfway done and on the way as well as a number of skirmish infantry.

My wife and I don't spend too many weekends at home while the ground is still free of snow. Our lastest kid-friendly weekend away had us visiting Prarie du Chien about 3hrs away and then across the river from Marquette. There were plenty of attractions for the kids at the long standing Ft. Crawford, fur trade museum and the native effigy mounds back over on the Iowa side.
There had long been European and native contact here as part of the fur trade and I believe this is dated back to the late 1600's. In 1805 Zebulon Pike was sent to explore the Mississippi River Valley. The picture above is from "Pike's Peak" (one of two peaks bearing his name in the U.S.). It is here that he recommended the building of a fort. The government however opted for a site down in the valley along the river. It is there that this area saw its only battle during the war of 1812.

The wargamer in me was hoping for, at least, some small scale action to be recreated in a skirmish game. As I understand it, 650 British approached and engaged Ft. Shelby with 60 Americans inside. After initial surrender terms were turned down, the British managed to run off the gunboat supporting the fort with some accurate cannon fire. After a day or so they were close enough to toss heated shells at the wooden walls. This was enough for the Americans, as surrender terms were then accepted. A fairly unspectacular affair without any loss of life. The British renamed it Ft. McKay before destroying it upon their departure.

Later on, Ft. Crawford was built to replace it and today the second military hospital still stands. This weekend the fort hosted a smalll group of reenactors (mostly from the civil war era)which the kids enjoyed immensely, especially the cannon and musket firing and the interaction enthusiastically offered by the reenactors.

As my daughter's history class continues to study Iowa history, we'll probably head here next.
Below are a few photos taken around rhe area.

Its obviously not my best work, but will do just fine on the games' table.

As the base size for Knyphausen, per the Brandywine scenario, was going to be much larger than the ones I had used previously for commanders, I needed a simple idea to fill some space. I'm not ready talent-wise to do a fancy little vignette, but I wanted to do something that was perhaps new for me and that I could use later. Looking around the scrap pile I found a Hessian officer I wasn't going to use and glancing over at the terrain area I noticed some supplies for creating water effects...why not. The final idea was to create a small often-wet/muddy/marsh area which may be encountered almost anywhere. Utilizing some greenstuff I created the edges of the water area and painted the inside using some dark greenish-brown paint before proceeding to use my normal basing up technique using wood glue etc. The final step, of course, was adding the water mixture. Although needing some further refinement I think it turned out acceptable and will no doubt come into use again somewhere else.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2fTojoun1vYjg3j-Jd_iV2dPhLhvWRr8PALbhBzlFlMVL3QDgMoH4rQxqB8bVEnZAh7MFOYf3CwrkPq5In78GobE4S2futtHxbB_almYHVM6GHjJvIt1qddHP03mWgNKDBIQkhysBX_Y/s200/kyn3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705232243615391586" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagHHnJTsZgnK-DzYQcf-zpNT53XRgTr8B4jg6Jq8u_oO46-h_Z_b5LFbJvkkPqMSQDr0ysXJmERFHp7SqJCAHt0VjiKLEzJx7GRAXEzkTcBgWe5uph71JAzxaG2-K_Z7w3Lcl7byzWdc/s200/kyn4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705232308229222002" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 107px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjucHM6_lZnFzKcP2jCmlcNkTsqGXMJvMap8YOmvvVBn19_FnD5XWj8en70Hf_kMcKaJAv-eaAe3ggy6DQf5SCB4B7dB48CkJpmkscODKjvKNIjTx6TO-NnWj-fr89X_0viGlQhggHUPLI/s200/kyn5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705232368879261122" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_9j_nCiY4Z2uIb7_CqOch1H5DznOXPMzni0Z5sciu4FjctrY7SQj2TXRsuYxegrkBMKw9rBuw51U8P3wQyexzHmZj68Uid7QuMs1e2DqIK_kkbSBYI7Ggn0_PHJ5v7uCGSuuTD6HoGrQ/s200/kyn6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705232420642473474" />

Iowa Grognardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00849551507054148559noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4213085941857846082.post-73544480631466235072012-01-24T16:38:00.006-06:002014-01-29T11:38:02.688-06:00F&D Continental Mounted Officers

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 183px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEDH7Uriv-HwZhfUu42-cLF06AwSbqv-ICIWzpBy1yTopVaodc7D-oKcs2Jx8pCPsEsf3HNqobs5BOMSIaEw1QQKE0If74XM_kJPu1hBBNNGbESMPzd24F4cykPhxGruON6iPZY9Iv13g/s320/gens1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701331981414582610" />

Saturday Morning found me progressing through a number of large units and looking for a minor distraction. Although there were a number of candidates, I decided on these two Continental Officers I had ordered from Jim over at Fife and Drum.

My goal with these was simply speed. I wanted to see how quickly I could paint these while keeping them eligible for most game tables. First of all, the castings are full of detail and very clean/crisp to work with. The thinner and more proportional size created an unexpected challenge as it was a break from what I've been familiar with. I didn't think that something as simple as this would provide a challenge, but it did.

I believe the end result was satisfactory, finished in a morning's painting alongside other figures. They probably do look a bit "rushed" in places, but after all...they were.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNiTftzNMx2h7yD9dRZW0ytjhPmbKLgTcIMn_9SUllVcrNPPzfyDP7pEWy0w6QaMgukCtu8ahAFBqoPSfmionXRHg3qaSu1N7jDw6itS5aGHCobAs4aib0xyHCQGOJe3HyBiWhqokFOtA/s200/gen1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701332092132764274" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLB8d38mk5x5WJsHNgdTEoKoO-X6ZMlUI1BYMo9YaddSlk-lfFrz7h2yEdF3GU2Y-aUb0RFKOHjUh8B-GdabzlR9CPBqHOMksjaq8NBrXKk-zqgkMFTVXAz8PD7r5yPzj1B7mjd2KDh0o/s200/gen2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701332159917403074" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 108px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsccou3c3EEuptGJsvM96XelYTQka9u0FwfWrgxm2f6aP8QIEdWLgpbjD5EEWxp6PegCzlZQex8vgIdbN7wvZNpN88Xq61Ok702mtELtUBxAKK83A4TLKnJuOYBr-8VIKIYYUsahA8hj0/s200/gens2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701332254049851602" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 164px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGvgd4WqSwFs1_vWJNIE3JcUr-isQ8_mTkk_gh0oK-vFpTUtDe6VeZVx_cmZ8_RtcaaUjQWN7ESjc6MPycrNKN5fH8EesP35Ae4FF4JGHI6j8aOCm5R6_LFLkzzLeobK1z9JDspiFYTgE/s200/gens3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701332314874864306" />

Iowa Grognardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00849551507054148559noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4213085941857846082.post-31795978739462312942012-01-18T08:50:00.004-06:002014-01-29T11:38:02.681-06:00American 12pd Artillery<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 182px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Rn-6-1MRQphK5f2y4BT4aVCkKCKcYs0nIwJRf5UoSCNYyFwByvqSGZzHAqzBo1-sCR50TX7FvixGfagCD-k92vBB6laMGJtupRhdfQcKJhLjt-y6Fb4uD2H6uOCG3P5FJghV8IApqt8/s320/DSCN0971.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984867514845074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 147px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSghN3yslv2yk0HevqqpGbQnK1grkv93AmFd8hTtwrEUBK8z1KA08DLHU4GRP94a3VEGBzShQ15kCsCgrLsHG5PLY6yCxztEYme-xXvq1ZzNsop8uKoG8EqPcrIQ9mUBJI1gCfStEjhA4/s320/AMART2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984651283100402" />
After a long time on the edges of the painting desk I finally put the finishes on these guys. I used Eureka's Molly Pitcher Crew along with two Front Rank 12pd guns.

I'm always trying to do things that are new to me when painting. With these I wanted to experiment with 3 different shades of white on the same figure to perhaps represent different weaves, cuts, or fits. I believed the shirts to be a loose fit so I chose to paint them the most white. The waistcoat I saw as a slightly more refined garment, so I used the menolith white to give it a slight sheen. The pants I imagined to be the tightest fitting clothing and as always when a person is working, they are the first to get scuffed, scraped or dirty. I decided on a slightly more gray shade to reflect that condition.

I'm unsure of the results, but these guys were, for me, an experiment in this direction.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx8-bQNJd5DvrHLIEc5L_Uejr310JTXMJ6u2K0IUg43U8Q7W59rlSzI-5KUE02xSE1t0RmB4cs9u2OGKbYXlHXmByAYUMMAmZPVMw8GIjSlg_X-jMWxeHkturMDKQVpmMGx-LYxT3l62w/s320/AMART6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984807784694706" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 234px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisykputPZp5BsfQtWpng6E-WOfMIQfnIbdlGLzgAaBAgfyG8SAE4OT-YM0_6yFiAzB1Z7flalhvili-XqNGX9p8W7fGLT13B0TzRmNd28rXM2I0nECMf2HQl1-I4PnUT7MLKBWcPczUwI/s320/AMART4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984745077738642" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 182px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Rn-6-1MRQphK5f2y4BT4aVCkKCKcYs0nIwJRf5UoSCNYyFwByvqSGZzHAqzBo1-sCR50TX7FvixGfagCD-k92vBB6laMGJtupRhdfQcKJhLjt-y6Fb4uD2H6uOCG3P5FJghV8IApqt8/s320/DSCN0971.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984867514845074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 147px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSghN3yslv2yk0HevqqpGbQnK1grkv93AmFd8hTtwrEUBK8z1KA08DLHU4GRP94a3VEGBzShQ15kCsCgrLsHG5PLY6yCxztEYme-xXvq1ZzNsop8uKoG8EqPcrIQ9mUBJI1gCfStEjhA4/s320/AMART2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698984651283100402" />Iowa Grognardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00849551507054148559noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4213085941857846082.post-60077765902355961672012-01-10T17:16:00.004-06:002012-01-10T17:30:24.626-06:00From 2012 to '11As 2011 closed with a flurry of non-wargaming activity and I've not had much opportunity to add on the blog. Most of my painting since October has been for other people and a unit or two I painted to sell on ebay, but I should have some of my own pieces to post shortly. My time at the painting desk has greatly increased and looks to be steady on in the near future.

The biggest development has been the arrival of Contessa Rin, born in December. The picture is roughly 20 minutes after she arrived. At that point, she looked like a set of lips and some hair, but luckily we found the rest of her.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9po0OTfHu1JeTIUED3X6nPw1n14paohRuMBkNpxJMIQZuVE8JXQOLAKBlquhuqc2MxN0eac0jq5ki8mY4zblG8GsrRjefHllNcbbdDhWiC9u08finke6kuW3yaHKO0HFCmnVm4Xsl554/s320/contessa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696148796539413746" />
I'm trying to convince the wife that 5 is enough, but time will tell...

Iowa Grognardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00849551507054148559noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4213085941857846082.post-12829003625455166162011-08-26T23:04:00.006-05:002014-01-29T11:38:02.678-06:002nd Pennsylvania

Back in late June I had decided to take a brief break from the Hessians to produce a couple American regiments in time for July 4th. One thing led to another and I've just finally finished the second regiment, the 2nd Pennsylvania. Painting this unit in this manner was inspired as always by Giles over at Tarleton's Quarter.
The flag was a minor modification of one offered and designed by Clarence over at Quindia Studios. He releases a new flag every week in what he has termed "Flag Monday"...some great stuff.

I'm not sure where I am at with my painting style. At times I feel like I'm going backwards in quality. I'll continue to experiment and attempt to find my groove, as they say. I'm considering trying a higher contrast style or maybe a speed painting style as I believe both speed and contrast are lacking from my work.

I've been a bit lacking lately in making the rounds to all my favorite blogs out there, but there has been some great content from what I have seen and as always thanks for all the kind comments here.
